wambeast I know I’ve shown this view before, but it’s so pretty and you can really see the old fortifications built into the natural rock (Petrusse valley at the bottom). #luxembourgville #luxembourgcity #fortifications #cathedral #cycling #gellefra

history.on.this.day Today on February 23rd 1945, the iconic photo of U.S. Marines raising the flag was taken during the bloody Battle of Iwo Jima. ••••• The Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest conflicts in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. The American assault was codenamed Operation Detachment and consisted of soldiers from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, and the 28th Regiment. The mission was to capture the heavily fortified Japanese island of Iwo Jima - a tiny volcanic island located southeast of Japan. The Japanese commander had been anticipating an attack and spent months building an intricate systems of underground tunnels and fortifications. The Japanese Air Force used the island as a base for fighter aircraft and bombers. The Americans hoped to secure Iwo Jima as a staging point for the future aerial bombardment of Japan. ••••• The bloody Battle of Iwo Jima dragged on for more than five weeks. While both sides experienced heavy casualties, almost all of the 22,000 Japanese defenders perished. The Marines fought particularly hard to control the Crest of Mount Suribachi, the highest and most strategic vantage point on the island. American soldiers during the initial assault briefly raised a flag after capturing the crest. The Marines still fighting their way up the deadly sloops cheered at the sight of the flag. As the day went on, additional waves of soldiers began reinforcing their important position on the crest. A second, and much larger flag was raised later on. ••••• The iconic World War II photo, ‘Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima’, was taken by Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945. It depicts six Marines raising the U.S. flag atop of Mount Suribachi. Rosenthal won the Pulitzer Prize for Photography later that year. He also filmed accompanying footage of the entire sequence, proving that this was not a ‘staged’ photo opportunity. Three of the six men in the photo were killed before the battle was over. By March 3, the Japanese had lost control over all three airfields on the island. Three weeks later, the last pockets of Japanese resistance were defeated and the Allies declared Iwo Jima had been secured.
