midwest.nps A view from 2009 at the ice caves. The cold has returned! Are we going to get to see them this year? Fingers crossed! (The ice caves are NOT open.) midwest.nps Currently, there is "pack ice" in front of the caves at Apostle Islands. What's that? "Pack ice" is made up of #ice chunks, crunched together by wind and waves. It is weaker and varies in depth more than "lake ice," which is formed without wind or waves. Lake ice is flat in appearance because the ice #crystals grow downward from the surface in nearly straight lines. This is the strongest type of ice because the crystals are bonded together. The quality of the ice determines how thick we need that ice to be before the ice caves are opened. #themoreyouknow #frozenAPIS (Dept. of Energy image) #findyourpark #nationalpark #wisconsin #winter #upclose #travel #frozen #coldweather #winterwonderland

midwest.nps Found in several Midwest parks, beavers prepare for winter by cutting tree branches and sticking them in the mud at the bottom of their pond near their lodge. When their pond or lake freezes over, the well insulated entrance to their lodge remains open and beavers can dive down and retrieve their food to bring back to their lodge to eat. #FindYourPark #MidwestNPS #wildlife #winter #minnesota #nature #quotes #quotestoliveby #roosevelt #quotesofinstagram #nationalpark #midwestlife #midwestmoment
