amistadnps As part of a research collaboration with the San Antonio Zoo, University of Texas-Austin, and Zara Environmental, we are surveying for cave-dependent animals including the endangered Mexican blindcat and the invertebrates that it depends on for food. This week we have SCUBA divers helping gather water samples from Goodenough Springs and other sites, which will be tested for the DNA of elusive cave dwellers. The divers are also helping to retrieve sampling nets which are deployed to capture groundwater invertebrates as they get pushed out by the spring water flow. #research #caves #invertebrates #LakeAmistad #AmistadNPS #TexasNPS #NPS

amistadnps Due to drops in water level over the past 6 weeks, a variety of hazards are popping up in the waters of the recreation area. Please use extra caution when boating on the waters in the recreation area, especially near shorelines or in canyons and coves. Pictured is the old Highway 277 which is normally under water. Current conditions have exposed the remnants of the old road which connects the 277S day use area to the 277N campground. #nps #nationalparkservice #usinterior #nationalpark  #sharetheexperience #findyourpark #neverstopexploring #optoutside #nationalparkgeek #rei1440project #igtexas #thegreatoutdoors #adventure #natureaddict #exploremore #getoutside #theoutbound #goparks #valverdecounty #Texas #wildernessculture #amistadnationalrecreationarea NPS Photo / Ranger Mateo

amistadnps Many people ask about the conditions at the confluence of the Pecos River and the Rio Grande. Usually, they want to know if the plug is navigble. There are a number of factors that contribute to fluctuations in water level. Over the winter the water level in the reservoir rose considerably. That was one of the factors leading to higher water levels in the Rio Grande and Pecos Rivers. As the reservoir level has decreased, so has the the level in the rivers. The Pecos plug is still navigable by a prop boat, but we always suggest jet boats. This picturewas taken on February 28, 2017. Conditions on the rivers continue to change; always exercise caution while boating. #pecosriver #nationalparkservice #usinterior #nationalpark  #sharetheexperience #neverstopexploring #optoutside #nationalparkgeek #rei1440project #igtexas #thegreatoutdoors #adventure #natureaddict #exploremore #getoutside  #theoutbound #goparks #valverdecounty #Texas #wildernessculture #amistadnationalrecreationarea NPS Photo/ Ranger Mateo

amistadnps The blackbrush is blooming, spring is coming early to the brushlands of Southwest Texas! Early blooms in Texas include blackbrush (yellow blossoms pictured), claret cup cactus, ocitillo, and laurel. Big Bend has already had bluebonnets, but we're still waiting. Stay tuned! #nps200 #nationalparkservice #usinterior #nationalpark  #sharetheexperience #neverstopexploring #optoutside #lakeamistad #diabloeast #blackbrush #springflowers #nationalparkgeek #rei1440project #igtexas #thegreatoutdoors #adventure #natureaddict #exploremore #getoutside  #theoutbound #goparks #valverdecounty #Texas #wildernessculture #amistadnationalrecreationarea NPS Photo / Ranger Mateo

amistadnps Members of the Amistad Search and Recovery Team participated in a training and clean up effort in the Rough Canyon section of the park this week. The unseasonably warm weather this week provided great conditions for divers to be in the water. The team pulled a large amount of litter out of the lake. Pease remember, folks, "Don't Mess With Texas"- help keep our lake and lands clean. Everyone can do their part by disposing of trash properly (pack it in, pack it out). #nps200 #nationalparkservice #usinterior #nationalpark #amistadnps #lakeamistad #sharetheexperience #findyourpark #neverstopexploring #optoutside #encuentratuparque #nationalparkgeek #rei1440project #igtexas #thegreatoutdoors #scubadiving #searchandrecovery #adventure #natureaddict #exploremore #getoutside  #theoutbound #goparks #valverdecounty #Texas #wildernessculture #amistadnationalrecreationarea NPS Photo / Ranger Mateo
